What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a mind-body technique that allows the practitioner to get information about the state of the client’s physiology in real time. Using this information, the practitioner can either work with the client to gain control of these internal processes or the practitioner can treat the client. Either way, the practitioner is able to use this information to help guide the client in ways that promote homeostasis. 

Biofeedback is a safe, non-invasive, and drug-free approach that has been proven effective for a wide range of conditions. It’s recognized by mainstream medicine, the Federal government, and the World Health Organization (WHO). Many insurance companies even cover biofeedback therapy!

Types of Biofeedback

There are two main types of biofeedback:

Traditional Biofeedback

In traditional biofeedback, the client actively participates in the process. The practitioner uses specialized equipment to monitor the client’s physiological signals. This information is displayed visually, allowing both the client and practitioner to see how their body responds to different thoughts, emotions, and stressors. With practice and guidance, the client can learn to consciously regulate these responses to improve their health. This awareness and control can lead to significant improvements in physical and mental well-being.

Neo-biofeedback also utilizes specialized technology, but in this approach, the practitioner takes a more active role in providing treatment. While the client still benefits from the physiological feedback, the focus is on receiving therapeutic interventions rather than actively learning self-regulation techniques.

Adjunctive Therapies are tools often used in tandem with Traditional and Neo Biofeedback sessions. They are used to support the sessions and enhance the efficacy of the biofeedback techniques.
